There is nothing wrong with making money. The desire and ability to make one’s life better and the life of one’s family better, when tempered with conscience, is a good thing. It’s a source of healthy motivation in our culture. The problem, both for individuals and companies, occurs when money is the ends. I recently read a great quote: “profit is to business what breathing is to life”. What this means to me is making at least a sustaining (if not growing) level of income is necessary to justify one’s efforts in a personal or business context, however not the point of existing. When the point of anything becomes solely to make money, a piece of our soul is lost.
Like everyone else, I would like a good comfortable life. But not at the cost of my soul. I wish to build extraordinary things. I wish to make the world a better place, even if it is in some small way. I wish to create more value and utility for my fellow man (and my fellow woman, of course). I wish to create an abundance not only for myself, but others as well. Victory and comfort are best enjoyed with company.
What motivates you? Don’t just settle for breathing; Choose an extraordinary life.
